Karlsruhe, September 6, 2025 — a date that changed the life of 31-year-old Krzysztof, a Polish truck driver. During a break at a parking lot in the Durlach district, near the German city of Karlsruhe, an assault occurred that shook the Polish trucking community and Polish public opinion.
Three Ukrainian citizens, employed at a Polish trucking company, allegedly attacked the Pole, causing severe injuries. Mr. Krzysztof sustained a deep laceration to his hand and was taken to the hospital. The alleged reason was a patriotic tattoo on the victim's arm, symbolizing pride in Polish colors and values. A charity fundraiser for Mr. Krzysztof has already surpassed 224,000 PLN, but the road to full recovery is still long.
According to accounts obtained by us from German police (who did not issue an official press release on the matter), the assailants used a sharp instrument to make a precise cut. The German prosecutor's office and police in Karlsruhe acted swiftly. The scene of the incident was a parking lot in Durlach, surrounded by Polish trucks — an irony of fate, since the assailants themselves drove trucks with Polish license plates, employed by a Polish trucking company. Three suspects, all Ukrainian nationals aged 44, 34, and 29, were detained at the scene. Toxicological tests revealed high blood alcohol levels: 2.15 per mille in one, 1.57 per mille in the other two. Tests on the victim showed 2.20 per mille. Despite this, on September 7 the suspects were released on bail. They will soon be charged under §224 StGB (the German Criminal Code) for dangerous bodily harm, as the Karlsruhe prosecutor's spokesperson notes.
The Karlsruhe Police Headquarters confirmed the incident in an official letter dated September 8. The document describes the event as a "report of an assault with a sharp instrument," referencing German law. The victim, a Polish resident born in 1984, was immediately transported to a hospital in Karlsruhe. The medical diagnosis is devastating: a stab wound in the cubital fossa, transection of the brachial vein, the biceps brachii muscle, and the brachialis muscle. Doctors warn that full function of the hand may be unattainable — Krzysztof, a father of two young children, does not know if he will ever return to the driver's seat.
"I did not provoke anyone; I was simply being myself,"
he reports in fundraiser updates. His children ask: "Why can't Daddy lift us up?" and his wife prays for strength. The first operation was successful, but rehabilitation, further procedures, and therapy lie ahead. The costs? Hundreds of thousands of PLN that the family does not have. Without work, with loans and daily expenses, they face ruin.
German police are not disclosing the motive — officially it is an "alcohol-fueled brawl" — but the victim points to a "patriotic context." The victim demands compensation, harsher penalties, and protection for Polish truckers abroad.
In response to the tragedy, a fundraiser called "Rescue for a Patriot" was launched on the platform pomagam.pl, initiated by the Center for Aid to the Needy. The goal: 250,000 PLN for treatment and family support. By October 14, 224,278 PLN had been raised from 3,775 donors — from a symbolic 1 PLN to a generous 200 PLN. "100% of the funds have already been transferred to Krzysztof's account," the organizer reports in an October 7 update.
