"Until now, Germany had this hinterland in our region, which gave it the status of a decision-maker in the EU. Will that remain the case in the future? Should it still be the case?" asks journalist Aleksandra Fedorska on the platform X.

In the first half of 2024, the Polish market became more valuable for German exports than the Chinese market. The United States is by far the most important market for German companies. German firms delivered goods worth 80 billion euros to the US. France, the Netherlands, and — in a new development — Poland. Exports to Poland rose by 4.6% to 48.4 billion euros, while exports to China fell by 2.7%, reaching 48.2 billion euros.

The shift in the ranking of Germany's main export markets is the result of several factors. On the one hand, Germany is reducing its dependence on China in the wake of political and economic tensions, especially after Russia's invasion of Ukraine. On the other hand, Poland has grown in importance thanks to strong trade ties, a developing economy, and geographic proximity.

Cathrina Claas-Muehlhaeuser, chairwoman of the Ost-Ausschuss (Eastern Committee), emphasized that Poland's success in this area could be a signal for the EU to accelerate the process of enlarging the Union to include countries of Eastern and Southeastern Europe.

Journalist Aleksandra Fedorska, who covers German affairs, commented on the German export data. "It is our Polish decision whether Germany is a power or not. We have more to say and we carry more weight than some here think," she declared.

Until now, Germany had this hinterland in our region, which gave it the status of a decision-maker in the EU. Will that remain the case in the future? Should it still be the case? Perhaps it should not,

the journalist reflects.
